CLOCK TOWER

BITOLA, NORTH MACEDONIA

The clock tower (Sahat kula) is erected in the center of Bitola. It is believed that it was built in 1830 together with the church 'St Demetrios'. According to the legend the Ottoman builders used 60 000 eggs for rendering that is still stable today. The base of the tower is square with side 5,8 m. The height is 30 m. Inside there is a ladder which leads to the upper part with the clock. In 1936 the German government pay for replacing the old clock mechanism with a new one in gratitude for the keeping of the old German military cemetery.
