KALEMEGDAN FORTRESS

BELGRADE, SERBIA

The Belgrade fortress is strategically situated at a hill where Sava river flows into Danube river. In the Roman period was known as Singidunum, seat of IV legion of Claudius. Slavic tribes settled here in VIIc. For the first Belgrade is capital of Serbia during the reign of Stefan Lazarevic. During that time the Middle age fortress is reconstructed. A new castle in the inner city was erected, fortification in the East and West part as well as Lower City and a port on the Danube were also built. In 1521 sultan Suleiman The Magnificent conquerred the city. In the next centuries Austrians and Ottomans changed their rule over it. 

Today the Fortress is a city park where is located the Military museum, archaelogical objects and real size models of dinosaurs.
