ST SPAS CHURCH

SKOPJE, NORTH MACEDONIA

St. Spas (also known as Church of the Ascension of Jesus) is an orthodox church in Skopje. It is located east of Skopje Fortress and is recognized as one of the most significant cultural monuments in the city . The church is three-nave. The side naves are covered with flat beams. The central one is vaulted. The iconostasis was completed in 1824 by the world famous local woodcarvers - Makarije Fr č kovski and brothers Petar and Marko Filipovski, while some of the throne icons were completed in 1867. In the church's courtyard there is a stone sarcophagus which turned out to be the final resting place of the greatest Macedonian revolutionary Gotse Delchev.
