STOBI

SKOPJE, NORTH MACEDONIA

Stobi is one of the biggest Roman towns in Macedonia. It is located in the valley of the Vardar river. Its ruins are the largest archaeological complex in the Republic of Macedonia. The town was founded by the peony tribe. For the first time Stobi was mentioned by Titus Livi after the victory of Phillip V against Dardani tribes in 197 BC. In II c BC the town was conquered by the Romans. In IV and V c large churches richly decorated with mosaics and frescoes were built. In V c. it became the capital of the Roman province Macedonia Secunda. Theodoric the Great plundered the town in 479. A terrible earthquake in 518 and attacks of Slavic and Avari tribes in VI c. lead to depopulation and end of life in the settlement.
