STRUGA

STRUGA, NORTH MACEDONIA

Struga is a town in Macedonia, situated on the north shore of Lake Ohrid. It's an ancient settlement dating back to the Neolithic Age and has evolved due to its strategic location on Via Egnatia – the main road connecting the Eastern and the Western Roman Empire. Struga's old name was 'Enhallon', which means "eel". It's not a surprise as the Ohrid's eel begins its migration from the town of Struga to the Sargasso Sea. The current name of the city has a Slavic origin and means "a place for fishing".

Struga is known as the capital of poetry. It is the birthplace of the two famous poets and teachers - the Miladinovi brothers. Every year the biggest poetic festival on the Balkans called "Struga's Poetry Evenings" takes place there.
